Peter Voulkos Signed Modern Abstract California Studio Pottery Chawan Tea Bowl

About the Item

A fantastic, freeform, heavy Chawan tea bowl by American master potter/artist Peter Voulkos who is universally known for his abstract expressionist ceramic pottery pieces and sculptures. The large (this is one of the larger tea bowl of his we have seen) bowl features an organic form with earth tones (like a natural ash Bizen ware glaze) and was wood-fired in his typical Japanese style. The work comes from a private California collection and is signed and dated (1992) by Voulkos on the underside/base. A unique and one of a kind piece. Would be a great addition to any collectors of Voulkos' work or Mid-Century Modern pottery/ceramics or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in about any setting. Peter Voulkos is widely considered to be the most important and impactful ceramists of the modern era. He won the Rodin Museum Prize at the first Paris Biennale in 1959 and was the winner of a Guggenheim fellowship in 1984. Voulkos received the College Art Association’s Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1997. He was made an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 2001. He also received six honorary doctorate degrees as well as three National Endowment for the Arts awards.
