About the Item

A set of 12 plates in creamware, in the Spanish shape. Each is hand-painted with an illustration from one of Æsop’s fables, and carries a title painted on the back - I've not been able to show all titles because I can only upload 20 pictures. Eleven have the PT monogram (unidentified); probably from Lessore’s workshop. They are certainly in his style. The PT monogram could be Joseph Petzl (German, 1803-1871). Exhibited: Wedgwood, Master Potter to the Universe, Roche Foundation, 2023. Aesop was a Greek fabulist and storyteller who is best known for his fables, which are short stories that feature animals as characters and convey moral lessons. Aesop's fables have been popular for thousands of years and have been translated into many languages. They continue to be widely read and retold to this day. There is very little known about the life of Aesop. He is believed to have lived in ancient Greece in the 6th century BC, but the details of his life are shrouded in legend. Aesop is said to have been a slave who was later freed and became a successful writer and speaker. Many of his fables feature animals as the main characters and use their behavior to teach lessons about human nature. Some of the most famous Aesop's fables include "The Tortoise and the Hare," "The Fox and the Grapes," and "The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing."

Trophy Plate, Wedgwood, circa 1900
By Wedgwood
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
Trophy plates were a particularly Victorian development at Wedgwood, taking the use of classical ornament to its absolute limit. Over 2,000 individual sprigs were made, applied, and undercut to produce this plate. Only the best decorators made these, beginning with Thomas Lovatt in the late 19th century - this is an example of his work. The central relief depicts Bellerophon with Pegasus. Bellerophon was a noble hero of Corinth, known for his strength and bravery. He was the son of Glaucus and the grandson of Sisyphus, though some myths suggest he was actually the son of Poseidon. Bellerophon was a skilled warrior and sought to accomplish great deeds. Pegasus was a magnificent, winged horse born from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa...
