About the Item
A scarce Palissy-style French rustic terrine, made by Saint Honoré-les-Bains, as a hen on a basket, circa 1890-1900.
Saint-Honoré-les-Bains is a commune in the Nièvre department in central France.
The rustic, majolica glazed pieces of Saint Honore Les Bains were often inspired by the work of the potter Bernard Palissy.
The covered terrine has a lid showing a hen glazed in brown and yellow ochre, sitting on a nest of green grass, warming two white eggs.
The base is in the Trompe ‘Oeil form of a woven basket in greens and yellow ocher, with two side handles.
There is a beautiful fluidity to the mold, very unusual. Gorgeous color.
Measuring 8.50 inches L x 5.50 inches W x 6.50 inches H
Marked with the impressed “Depose,” the French term for “Registered.”
In incredible condition – the light expected crazing to the glaze.
