Rare service of six knife rests in silver metal, signed by the prestigious artist Benjamin Rabier and the silversmith Pierre Devouge. Each piece represents a fable of Jean de la Fontaine: Picture 2: The two rats and the egg (les deux rats et l’oeuf) Picture 3: The Dog and the Wolf (Le loup et le chien) Picture 4: The Grasshopper and the Ant (la cigale et la fourmi) Picture 5: The Frog and the Ox (La Grenouille qui se veut faire aussi grosse que le bœuf) Picture 6: The Wolf and the Lamb (Le loup et l’agneau) Picture 7: The Cat, the Weasel and Little Rabbit (Le Chat, la Belette et le Petit Lapin) To complete this set, check out our other items, you will find another set of six pieces of the same model and same silversmith. Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) is a French poet of great renown, mainly for his Fables which are always considered as one of the greatest masterpieces of French literature. Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939 ) was a French illustrator, comic book artist and animator. He became famous for creating the cow's design on cheese "La vache qui rit" (The Laughing Cow) and and for the comic strip character Gedeon ( Gideon the duck). He is considered one of the greatest European animal cartoonists. His work has inspired many other artists, notably Hergé and Edmond-François Calvo. The condition is very good to excellent. Overall with a hundred years of age, the service seems to have not been used. Micro-scratches from normal use.
