About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver serving spoons made by Francis Higgins II; an addition to our silver flatware collection These exceptional antique Victorian English cast sterling silver serving spoons have been crafted in a figural form. Each cast sterling silver handle terminal is modelled in the form of a putto covering himself strategically with a floral arrangement. The characters surmount impressive pedestal style stems, each accented with a shield shaped vacant cartouche and interlacing fruiting vine ornamentation. The posterior surface of each stem incorporates a ribbed texture to the waisted portion. These exceptional Victorian silver serving spoons have plain rounded bowls accented with a rat-tail design to the heel. These spoons were crafted by the renowned London silversmith Francis Higgins II. Such figural spoons are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. In art and culture, a putto (plural: putti) is a chubby male child, usually nude and occasionally bearing wings. Condition These antique Victorian silver serving spoons are a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The cast decoration is all very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of each bowl are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver.
