An 18th Century Galician Silver Torah Shield

About the Item

An 18th-century Galician silver Torah shield is rich in artistic and religious significance reflecting the cultural and artistic influences of the time and region. The 18th century in Galicia (part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the time) saw significant Baroque artistic influence, characterized by elaborate details and dramatic expressions. Galicia, located in present-day Poland and Ukraine, was known for its skilled Jewish artisans who created ritual objects with exceptional craftsmanship. Shield-shaped with a rounded top, the Torah shield features a prominent foliate crown affixed at its apex, symbolizing the crown of the Torah. Framed by two foliate-decorated pillars sprouting bouquets at their heads, the shield is adorned with intricate acanthus leaf motifs meticulously crafted using repoussé and chased techniques. The central inscription, "Shabbat" written in Hebrew on a raised cartouche encircled by garlands highlights the shield’s purpose. A lovely prancing lion is embellished at the lower center of the shield flanked by C-scroll and floral motifs. Encircling the shield are beautifully chased laurel wreaths and a shell crown at its peak the shield is equipped with affixed chains to drape it securely over the Torah scroll. This Torah shield honored the Torah scroll it was draped over, enhancing the beauty and sanctity of the synagogue's Torah service. It is a testament to the rich Jewish heritage of Galicia, reflecting both the artistic prowess and deep religious devotion of its community. 9.32ozt.
