A Damascene Silver and Copper Hanukkah Lamp, Syria 1910
About the Item
A Stunning Damascene Silver and Copper Hanukkah Lamp from Syria, circa 1910.
Historically this lamp was made in the late Ottoman period, when Syria was part of the Ottoman Empire. This was a time of cultural richness and exchange, with Damascus being a renowned center for craftsmanship and trade.
Damascene refers to a technique where silver or gold is inlaid into a dark metal (often copper or steel) to create intricate patterns and designs. In this case, the Hanukkah lamp combines silver and copper, showcasing the skilled craftsmanship of Syrian artisans known for their metalwork.
Backplate is magnificently decorated with inlaid silver intricately chased in the form of two uniquely designed lions flanking a foliate-adorned lit menorah and three encircled stars of David. Below, a set of inlaid silver archways crowned with floral motifs and surrounded with the Hebrew blessings made during the lighting of the candles on each night of Hanukkah.
The top extension of the backplate is pierced with wonderful foliage and intertwined vine-scrolling. Hannukah lamp is framed by verses said in the prayer recited immediately after the blessings on the candles and two torches atop two circular enclosed stars of David.
Attached at the bottom of the backplate is a protruding rounded drip pan with eight tapering rectangular oil containers pinched at the ends for the placement of the wicks. The lower end of the backplate is furnished with foliate inlays cut into shaped designs at the edges.
This Damascene Silver and Copper Hanukkah Lamp from Syria circa 1910 portrays the artistic traditions and cultural history of Syrian Jews during the early 20th century. A very unique Hanukkah lamp, possibly one or two ever made or in existence today.

A Silver Hanukkah Lamp , Germany Circa 1930
Located in New York, NY
A Unique Silver Arts and Crafts Hanukkah Lamp, made in Germany Circa 1930.
This Hanukkah Lamp is truly unique and has a few different styles of craftmanship and designs that make up its structure. Seemingly this menorah looks to be made for children.
The shaft and the base are remarkably executed. the light hammering on the base referenced the Arts and Crafts movement while the shaft is designed in an Art Deco fashion. However, the cut-out pattern of the palm leaves and the engraved Stars of David are of a lower standard; the engraving in particular is sloppy and crude.
Yet the cups and the finial and the small bells at the end of the leaves are well done- the balls cite the influence of the Secession, yet another art trend.
Whatever may be for the apparent contradiction in the quality of workmanship, this is an interesting Rarity.
Hallmarked and signed at the bottom of the hammered base.
