Very Fine 19th Century Sterling Silver Christening Cup by Edward & James Barnard

About the Item

An exceptionally fine sterling silver Christening mug in the neoclassical taste, showing an elegant goblet-shaped bowl decorated with a guilloche beaded rim, over a running band of engraved Greek key motifs. The interior exhibiting a richly gilded surface, the exterior affixed with a superb foliate cast handle, fronted by an engraved monogram, and bearing impressed London hallmarks with date letter for 1866 and maker’s marks for Edward & James Barnard. (The firm of Barnard & Sons is considered to be the oldest silversmith firm in history, with its origins dating back to 1680). Of elevated form and in fine overall condition. Also of considerable weight for a Christening cup of this scale, weighing an impressive 170 grams or 5.46 troy ounces. Dimensions, 5.5” high (to the top of the handle) x 3” diameter (across the rim) and 4" diameter from the rim to the handle.
