About the Item

Geo III Sterling Pierced Grand Tour Bowl, Newcastle 1771-1772 by Nathan & Hayes, Newcastle 1771-1772, This 255-year-old masterwork of Georgian sterling pierced swan-handled bowl with Roman mythological vignettes Dimensions: 7" W x 5.75" H x 4.75" D Base: 2.5" x 2.5" weight 10 ounces This Georgian Sterling Silver Pierced Bowl, made by Nathaniel and Hayes of Newcastle (1771-1772), is an exceptional example of 18th-century British silver craftsmanship. featuring pierced detailing, swan-shaped handles, and Roman mythological vignettes. With its elegant proportions—measuring 7 inches wide, 5.75 inches high, and 4.75 inches deep—this refined piece is perfect for display or functional use as a centerpiece, sugar basket, or decorative accent. The swan handles, a popular motif in Georgian silver, symbolize grace and purity, enhancing the bowl’s neoclassical appeal. The body of the bowl showcases pierced latticework, adding depth and texture while allowing light to filter through for a delicate effect. On each side, finely detailed Roman mythological scenes are framed by laurel wreath medallions, representing themes of triumph and honor. The bowl rests on a square pedestal base, adorned with floral engraving and a beaded border, providing balance and sophistication. The pierced work was a hallmark of Georgian silver, offering an airy, lace-like aesthetic. Ideal for collectors of fine silver, antique enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a statement piece that merges history, artistry, and elegance, this Georgian sterling silver bowl is a timeless addition to any distinguished collection. First Vignette (Left Image): This scene shows a male figure, possibly a hero or deity, raising his arm in an assertive or combative pose, facing a female figure holding an object that resembles a torch or staff. The female figure could represent Hestia (Vesta), goddess of the hearth, holding a torch symbolizing the eternal flame, or possibly Nike, goddess of victory, presenting a wreath or symbol of triumph. The male figure’s dynamic posture suggests an act of victory, confrontation, or divine encounter. Second Vignette (Right Image): The second scene features a centaur, a mythological creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse. The centaur is carrying what appears to be a putto or Cupid-like figure, which commonly symbolizes love and desire in Roman mythology. This could reference Chiron, the wise centaur who mentored heroes like Achilles, or it could depict a more romantic or playful narrative involving Eros (Cupid). These vignettes reflect common neoclassical themes popular during the Georgian era, emphasizing mythology, triumph, and the human connection to the divine. The mythological medallions suggest Neoclassical influences, popular in the 18th century, inspired by the Grand Tour culture where wealthy Europeans collected artifacts from Greece and Rome. Ideal for collectors of fine silver, antique enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a statement piece that merges history, artistry, and elegance, this Georgian sterling silver bowl is a timeless addition to any distinguished collection.
