A Moroccan Silver and Velvet Mezuzah Case, Circa 1910

About the Item

An Ornate Moroccan Silver and Velvet Mezuzah Case, Circa 1910 It is a custom in some Sephardic countries to place the 'Klaf' flat, that is, not rolled in the receptacle affixed to the doorpost. To avoid touching the written parchment, a decorative cover is placed over it and this is what the hand touches when kissing the mezuzah. These covers are handmade and quite beautiful and sometimes personalized with the family name or in memory of a beloved relative. This Mezuzah case is made in a shield form signifying the purpose of the mezuzah- to shield a person's home from harm. The silver foliate designs engraved into the pierced cover were hand-cut and furnished with a red velvet liner for the scroll that is placed upon it. The name "Esther Esbag" underneath "Shadai" (the name of G-d) written in Hebrew, is cut through the silver bar at the top of the case. Interestingly Hallmarked at the side of the top silver pierced bar.
