About the Item

This rare and finely crafted pair of miniature silver tefillin cases, made in the United States circa 1900, offers a glimpse into the religious practices and material culture of observant Jews during a time when compact tefillin were favored—especially for those who traveled frequently or served in the military. In contrast to the larger modern versions seen today, these smaller tefillin cases reflect a period when scribes were more skilled in micro-calligraphy, allowing for the production of diminutive yet fully halachically valid tefillin. Both cases are crafted in solid silver, each formed as a perfectly proportioned cube—a symbolic and sacred shape echoing the form of the tefillin themselves. The silver serves not only as a protective material but also as a statement of reverence and significance, elevating the sanctity of the ritual items housed within. Each box is individually engraved to denote its intended use: One bears the Hebrew inscription "של ראש" (for the head), The other "של יד" (for the hand), both meticulously engraved in a clear and elegant script across the front face of the cases. Delicate engraved borders with interlacing motifs adorn the upper edges of each cube, adding a refined decorative element while maintaining a sense of dignified restraint appropriate to sacred objects. The lids fit snugly and securely, designed to both protect and preserve the sanctity of the contents. The interiors are lined in soft, felt-like fabric, cushioned and gently contoured to nestle the tefillin in place, preventing movement and ensuring that the sacred items remain intact and undisturbed. A padded base beneath the lining offers subtle support and structure, reflecting the care with which the cases were constructed. Miniature tefillin such as these, though now rare, stand as testaments to both practical religious life and spiritual devotion during the early 20th century. 1.095ozt

Featured on the outside of the four sides of the tefillin covers are beautiful chased motifs of grape clusters on hanging vines, pomegranates growing on trees, palm trees with hanging date clusters, and fig bushes with figs sprouting from their branches. These four species of fruit are part of the seven species...
