Pair of Antique Sterling Silver Georgian Covered Sauce Tureens

About the Item

This pair of antique covered sauce tureens are hallmarked by an unknown maker, but originated from England and date to approximately 1820 and done in the period Georgian style. The tureens are composed of sterling silver and have artichoke finials and tasteful beaded decoration around the lid and base. The front panel has an engraved crest and both are clearly hallmarked with the lion passant for English sterling silver.

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique George III English sterling silver sauce tureens with ladles; an addition to our Georgian silverware collection. These exceptional antique George III sterling silver sauce tureens have a plain rectangular rounded form. The body of each tureen is plain and embellished with an applied gadroon decorated border to the lower portion and upper rim. These impressive silver tureens retain the original hallmarked push fit covers ornamented with further applied gadroon decoration to the upper plateau in addition to the base of the impressive reed decorated handle enveloped with leaf designs to the terminals. The surface of each cover is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting a falcon holding a partridge between her feet and encompassed with the belted motto 'Qui potest capere capiat', Let him who can take, take. Each Georgian tureen is fitted with two fine and original ring loop handles above an impressive lion mask ornamentation. Each tureen is supported by four impressive shaped legs with paw feet. These sauce tureens are presented with fine and impressive associated chester made, antique sterling silver sauce ladles crafted in the Hanoverian rat tail pattern by Herbert Edward Barker & Frank Ernest Barker of Barker Brothers. A exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique George III English sterling silver sauce tureens with ladles; an addition to our Georgian silverware collection These exceptional antique George III sterling silver sauce tureens have a plain oval shaped form onto a plain oval spreading pedestal foot to a collet rim. The body of each tureen is encompassed with an applied girdle above a contemporary bright cut engraved coat of arms displaying an escutcheon party per pale of a cross engrailed and a lion rampant, encompassed with fabric swaps and suspended tassels. The rim of each antique tureen is encompassed with an applied gadroon decorated border. These impressive sterling silver Georgian tureens retain the original hallmarked push fit covers, surmounted with an impressive reed decorated handle enveloped with chased decorated leaf designs to the terminals. Pair of Paul Storr, English, sterling silver tureens or covered vegetable dishes, beautifully adorned with gadrooned rims, natural motifs, and a noble crest, from 1809 (George III era). They measure 14'' from handle to handle (10 1/2'' excluding the handles) by 11 1/2'' in height (height of the stands are 4 3/4''). Total silver weight is 93 troy ounces; the stands and the liners are original Sheffield plate. Hallmarks are shown. Paul Storr (1770-1844) is considered the greatest English silversmith of the Regency era, and his beautifully ornate silver reflected the rapidly changing world in which he lived. Storr's reputation rests on his mastery of the grandiose neo-Classical style developed in the Regency period. He quickly became the most prominent silversmith of the nineteenth century, producing much of the silver purchased by King George III and King George IV.
