About the Item

This pair of antique covered sauce tureens are hallmarked by an unknown maker, but originated from England and date to approximately 1820 and done in the period Georgian style. The tureens are composed of sterling silver and have artichoke finials and tasteful beaded decoration around the lid and base. The front panel has an engraved crest and both are clearly hallmarked with the lion passant for English sterling silver.

They measure 14'' from handle to handle (10 1/2'' excluding the handles) by 11 1/2'' in height (height of the stands are 4 3/4''). Total silver weight is 93 troy ounces; the stands and the liners are original Sheffield plate. Hallmarks are shown. Paul Storr (1770-1844) is considered the greatest English silversmith of the Regency era, and his beautifully ornate silver reflected the rapidly changing world in which he lived. Storr's reputation rests on his mastery of the grandiose neo-Classical style developed in the Regency period.
