Hester Bateman, 1709-1794, was the most famous English female silversmith of the eighteenth century. She and her husband John worked together until his death in 1760. Hester, then a mother of five, took over the business and not only supported her children, but also succeeded in providing them with a legacy of a family business. Her sons Peter and John became silversmiths, as did her grandson, William.
