About the Item

A fine pair of silver salt and pepperette chicks modelled by Sampson Mordan. The pepper is dispensed from the top of the chicks head, the salt is designed for the salt to poor out through the beak. They weigh approx 15g each and are about 4cm or 1 1/2 inches high. The number (RD 461360) can be dated to 1896 , there were two versions This pair where the heads of the chicks are removable to allow filling and the other, which are filled from below. There were two types of design for these sets , some having the chick emerging from an egg or like these fully emerged and on their feet. The pepperette has hallmarks for chester 1905 and the salt is hallmarked sheffield 1906 These chicks are in overall very good used condition with no dents or repairs .Contact with salt leaves oxidation and there is some evidence of this having occurred to the salt chicks head (see image) The hallmarks for the pepperettes detachable head are very worn, but clearly marked to base (see image) This is a very decorative set which are becoming hard to find .
