About the Item

Pair of Rare and Important American Sterling Silver Repoussé Fruit Baskets by S. Kirk & Son, Baltimore, Circa 1868-1896 An exceptional and rare pair of American sterling silver fruit or centerpiece baskets by S. Kirk & Son of Baltimore, executed in their most opulent high-relief repoussé style and dating to the last quarter of the 19th century. These monumental oval-form baskets are masterworks of American silver craftsmanship, combining exuberant naturalism with sculptural artistry emblematic of Kirk’s finest work from the post-Civil War period. Each basket is deeply chased and repoussé-worked with a lavishly detailed border of full-blown garden flowers in varying stages of bloom, including roses, wild lilies, tulips, daisies, morning glories, pansies, poppies, and acanthus leaves. The floral garland is not simply decorative but sculpturally rendered with volumetric precision, rising in high relief from a finely pebbled ground that enhances the depth and naturalism of the composition. Acanthus-framed foliate reserves, scalloped flower heads, and curling tendrils intermingle with richly layered foliage to form a continuous botanical tapestry that fully encircles the gently sloping rims. The handles are of particularly fine artistry—naturalistically modeled as entwined vines with curling stems and grape leaves, the joins adorned with foliate clasps, and executed with an exceptional sense of movement and asymmetry. The central well of each basket is mirror-polished and left unadorned, creating a striking visual contrast with the highly textured border and serving both a functional and compositional role, reflecting ambient light and enhancing the three-dimensional repoussé surface. The baskets are raised on integrated oval foot rings and bear to the reverse the stamped mark “S. Kirk & Son”. The construction and marks are consistent with the firm’s production during the 1868-1896 period, when the company operated under this name and was renowned for its heavy gauge silver and elaborate repoussé technique. Total weight: 1057 grams. Dimensions: 13.5 inches wide x 8 inches deep x 2.5 inches high. These baskets were almost certainly conceived as important display pieces, likely produced on commission or for presentation. They reflect the height of late 19th-century American silversmithing at a moment when Kirk’s repoussé wares stood at the forefront of American decorative arts. Pieces of this scale, condition, and intricacy—particularly in pairs—are exceedingly rare and represent a pinnacle of form and ornament in Gilded Age silver.
