A Scottish Silver Torah Pointer, Glasgow late 19th century

About the Item

A Scottish Silver Torah Pointer, made in Glasgow in the late 19th century. Pieces of Judaica which originates from Scotland are particularly rare indeed. Not many pieces of Judaica were made there because the community consisted of immigrants leaving central Europe due to Anti-Semitism. South Portland Street Synagogue was a former Orthodox Jewish synagogue, that was located at 85-89 South Portland Street in the Gorbals area of Glasgow, Scotland, in the United Kingdom. The synagogue was the longest-surviving synagogue in the Gorbals and was considered to be the last Jewish building in the area, and was the center of traditional Jewish life until it closed in 1974. The congregation, who worshipped in the Ashkenazi rite, was formed in 1881 in response to the large numbers of Jewish immigrants who were moving to the Gorbals area. As a result of this immigration, several synagogues were established in the Gorbals, of which South Portland Street was the largest. This silver Torah pointer with a quadrangular handle decorated with foliate engraved motifs and inscribed in English with a dedication by a patron. The dedication reads "Presented by Rita Lebovich To South Portland St. Synagogue, March 5th 1939." A spherical knob with a suspension ring is applied to the top and a saucer knob at the center tapering to a formed arm bracer. The pointer terminates in a ruffled cuff and vintage gloved hand with an outstretched pointing ringed finger. Hallmarked and signed L. Victor on top of the pointing hand

The yad ensures that an impure hand does not touch the fragile parchment; issues also arise when ink does not absorb to the velum and there can be damage to the wording. Condition This antique yad...
