About the Item

This exceptional set of eight sterling silver salt cellars by Carl Poul Petersen showcases the refined design and meticulous hand craftsmanship for which this Canadian-Danish silversmith is renowned. Each cellar takes the whimsical yet elegant form of a miniature teacup, seamlessly blending function with sculptural artistry. Measuring modestly in scale, each salt cellar features a delicately shaped handle and rests on a rounded base. The interior is richly gold-washed, a luxurious and practical detail that both protects the silver from salt corrosion and adds a warm contrast to the cool gleam of the exterior. Along the rim of each cup are five small triangular cutouts—thoughtfully designed not merely as decoration, but to allow fine salt to dispense gently when tilted, offering both charm and utility. The underside of each piece is hallmarked with the full range of Carl Poul Petersen’s distinctive marks, including: “PETERSEN” (the maker’s surname in full) “handmade” (indicating true artisanal construction) “sterling” (denoting .925 silver purity) The maker’s monogram “PP” And Petersen’s personal maker’s hallmark, used consistently across his studio’s mid-century output. As a former apprentice to Georg Jensen and a master silversmith in his own right, Petersen brought a Danish Modern sensibility to his Canadian workshop, producing small-batch, handcrafted sterling pieces marked by subtle elegance and organic form. These salt cellars reflect that legacy—modest in scale but beautifully considered in every detail. A rare and collectible set, ideal for fine table settings or display, and a wonderful example of 20th-century North American silversmithing rooted in Scandinavian design tradition.
