Set of 9 Figural Sterling Silver Napkin Rings, Taxco School, Mexico, Mid-20th C.

About the Item

Set of 9 Figural Sterling Silver Napkin Rings, Taxco School, Mexico, Mid-20th Century A whimsical and sculptural set of nine hand-wrought sterling silver figural napkin rings, attributed to the Taxco School of silversmithing in Mexico, circa mid-20th century. Each napkin ring is uniquely formed as a stylized animal, including four front-facing bunnies with expressive upright ears, two side-profile rabbits, two ducks, and a single penguin. All are individually crafted with distinctive proportions and animated presence, their eyes set with colored stones or glass cabochons. Marked “Sterling” and “.925,” with a circular “C” maker’s mark and Mexico silver assay stamp, these pieces reflect the spirited design language characteristic of the Taxco School—likely produced in the orbit of midcentury workshops such as Los Castillo or Sanborns. Bold silhouettes and smoothly rounded contours recall both folk art traditions and modernist design. One particularly delightful element: several of the animal figures emit a soft internal rattle when handled—possibly intended as baby rattles or simply offering a playful surprise. This unexpected detail enhances the set’s collectible charm and adds a subtle layer of interactivity. Dimensions vary slightly by form, averaging approximately 2.5 to 2.75 inches high and .25 inches thick. Whether used at the table or displayed as objet d’art, this complete grouping is a rare and imaginative example of midcentury Mexican silverwork.
