About the Item

A Silver Mezuzah Case made by Mikhail Khandros in 1992. Mikhail Khandros (1956-)Mikhail Khandros, born in Odessa, USSR, received a B.A. in Theater Design at the Odessa Theater College. In 1989 he came to the U.S., where he studied typography, mechanical art and graphics at the Parsons School of Design. He restores masterpieces in metal, wood, porcelain and marble, and prepares artistic reproductions for movies and television. He also does painting, sculpture, and jewelry for private and corporate clients. His works include paintings, and sculptures in wood, bronze, marble, clay, metal, stucco, and gypsum. Mikhail may be the first person to have created a mezuzah bearing a miniature portrait of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, z"ll. The Rebbe served as a source of courage and inspiration to Mikhail during the artist's years in Russia and after he immigrated to the United States. This Mezuzah is very substantial and hand-wrought of silver in a myriad of designs starting with a Decalogue at the base and moving upwards to the deep diamond-shaped patterns encompassing small letter "Shin's" and floral motifs within. Crowned at the top with a foliate crown and a Star of David above further foliate scrolling. Signed by the artist on the back cover of the Mezuzah Case Literature and a similar example are found in Belle Rosenbaum's book "Upon Thy Doorstep".
