Sterling Silver Pair of Baluster Sugar Castors Hallmarked:-Birmingham 1896

About the Item

Sterling Silver - pair of sugar castors made in Birmingham in 1896. At that time, 127 years ago, they would have been made as pepperettes. Meat was often going off, and past it`s best, when it was eaten, so a strong pepper was used to mast the smell and taste. The holes are far to large for, modern day, ground pepper. Today they will be used as table sugar castors for dressing fruit. Fully hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office for 1896:- Lion - Sterling silver guarantee. Lower case w - Birmingham date letter for 1896 Anchor - Birmingham Assay Office mark. The maker`s mark - J.W.C for John William Caldicott, Great Hampton Street, Birmingham. Here we have a superb, identical pair of baluster shaped castors. The top with pierced diamond pattern panels and rising to a flame finial. The baluster body mounted on a, stepped, trumpet shaped, foot. The tops are "push on" type, and fit very securely. They will never come off accidentally. For the best fit, they should be pushed on and then rotated to the tightest position. Superb, very near original condition, made in heavy gauge silver, with no faults. Height:- 129 millimetres / 5.08 inches. Foot diameter:- 46 mms. / 1.81 ins. Pair weight:- 170 grams / 5.47 troy ounces.
