Sterling Silver SUPERIOR VICTORIAN TEAPOT Hallmarked:- Birmingham 1895

About the Item

Sterling Silver SUPERB VICTORIAN TEAPOT Identified with English Hallmarks, applied by the Birmingham Assay Office. Hallmarks:- Lion - Sterling silver guarantee Lower case v - Date letter for Birmingham 1895 Anchor - Mark of the Birmingham Assay Office H M - Mark for Henry Matthews ( applied by the maker) A really superior teapot in very very near original condition. It was heavily stained, inside, but we have had it soaking for about four hours - a heaped teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in boiling water. It is, now, stain free, just a little darker than it would have been, originally, Decorated on top with four panels - C scrolls with piercing and stylised foliage; gadrooning decoration between. The lid sits, completely blind round the edge, and notice the fantastic blind hinge. The flower shaped lift is seated on a fluted dome. When opened, the lid sits just past vertical, so to won`t drop down when the pot is being filled. The lower two thirds of the pot is fluted in the same style as the lid. Mounted on a shallow circular foot. The C shaped handle is made of wood - excellent insulation against the heat of boiling water in the teapot. Notice the extended thumb rest on top of the handle - gives secure control for the hand so the pot does not slip. Large enough for Tea for Two and with enough for a second cup. MUST BE THE PRETTIEST AND BEST POT I`VE EVER HAD. Logistics:- Overall length - 232 millimetres / 9.19 inches. Overall height - 110 mms. / 4.33 ins. Diameter - 140 mms. / 5.52 ins. Gross weight - 454 grams / 14.6 troy ounces. Capacity - more than 700 millilitres / 1.23 pints.
