English Sterling flatware service in fitted chest Husk Shell AKA Fiddle Husk flatware set - 91 pieces. This service includes pieces by Mary Chawner c1835 as well as by CJ Vander c1988 with a similar fiddle shell design with slightly straighter sides. This service includes: 12 Dinner Size Knives, 10” (CJ Vander) 12 Dinner Size Forks, 8 1/4”, heavy 3.1 ozt each (Mary Chawner) 11 Luncheon Knives, 8 1/8” (CJ Vander) 12 Salad/Dessert Forks, 6 7/8” (11 - Chawner, 1 CJ Vander) 12 Small Teaspoons, 5 5/8” (Mary Chawner) 12 Place Soup Spoons, 7” (Mary Chawner) 12 Dinner Spoons, 8" Heavy 3.3 ozt each (Mary Chawner) 4 Master Salt Spoons, gold-washed, 4 1/2" (Mary Chawner) 1 Gravy Ladle, 7 5/8" (Mary Chawner) 1 Soup Ladle, 14" (Mary Chawner) 1 Stuffing Spoon, 12" (Mary Chawner) 1 Fish Server, pierced, 12 1/2" (Mary Chawner) Includes a large 2-drawer vintage fitted storage chest. Excellent condition. This set will be lightly professionally polished and sealed in individual plastic sleeves prior to shipping. The Chawner pieces bear an engraved crest, as shown. We can remove the crest for the buyer, upon request. The C.J. Vander pieces are not monogrammed. Fabulous! History: The Chawner family silver business was set up in 1815 by William Chawner and his silver workshop became the most dominant force in silver flatware production through the 19th century. Apprenticed to the William Eley and William Fearn partnership for 7 years from 1797, he became the third partner of this company in 1808. The experience from this top quality partnership provided him with the knowledge to set up his own workshop at 16 Hosier Lane, London to produce some of the finest quality silver spoons and forks of the period. William and his wife Mary, had a son William, who undertook his apprenticeship with his father, and a daughter Mary Ann. On his death in 1834 his widow Mary (also a spoonmaker) took over the business ready for her son William to take over however, in 1838, after completing his apprenticeship he instead entered the church. The family business therefore was left to the George Adams, husband of Mary Ann, to go into partnership with Mary Chawner from 3rd August 1840 until 23rd November of the same year. Under the leadership of George Adams the company flourished and became the most prolific producer of the very best quality silver flatware in a variety of patterns. 100% Satisfaction guaranteed!
