About the Item

An Extremely Rare Set of Four William & Mary Silver Gilt Scratch Engraved Trefid Teaspoons Made in London circa 1690, Maker's Mark of Ah, With a Crown Above and Cinquefoil Below. As you will appreciate, it is extremely rare to find a set of these spoons from this date. Each is modelled in the trefid style and the front of the stem is engraved with foliate scrolls and a "Mask" motif emerging from the scrolls. The reverse of the stem is similarly engraved and displays a vacant oval cartouche. The reverse of the bowl displays a pronounced rat tail, which is flanked either side with foliate motifs. The spoons are in excellent condition, with a good tip to the bowl and the original gilding is in excellent condition. Each has a good maker's mark. As we have emphasised, sets of teaspoons from the 17th century are exceptionally rare and the maker's mark is illustrated on page 145 of Jackson's, "Silver & Gold Marks". The example of his work which is cited is a Trefid teaspoon, so he must have been a specialist in this area of production. Additional information: Length: 4.45 inches, 11.13cm
