A set of port glasses, etched and engraved, Lobmeyr C1880

About the Item

A set of six port or sherry glasses, brilliantly engraved with Birds & Branches pattern, after 18th century examples. In the late 18th century, Lobmeyr played a significant role in the revival of traditional German glass craftsmanship. Founded in 1823 by Joseph Lobmeyr, the Austrian glass manufacturer emerged during a period of increasing demand for high-quality, handcrafted glass. While Lobmeyr itself was established in the early 19th century, it drew inspiration from the traditions of earlier German glassmaking that had flourished in regions like Bohemia and Saxony during the late 18th century. During this time, traditional German glass styles were characterized by fine engravings, a mastery of cutting techniques, and a focus on clarity and lightness. The revival emphasized a return to these roots, reintroducing craftsmanship and luxury into glass production, which had been somewhat diluted by the rise of cheaper, mass-produced items.
