Traditional Russian Silver Ladle Made in Year of Radical Change, 1861
About the Item
Russian silver ladle, 1861. Fiddle terminal engraved on recto with interlaced script monogram; oval bowl. A traditional serving piece made in a year of radical change with the Edict of Emancipation, which liberated all privately owned serfs, who were now free to leave the estates to which they and their ancestors had been bound for centuries. Most expeditiously deployed by a household servant though with self-serve potential, however the case may be. Marks include maker’s initials (MS), indistinct assayer’s stamp with year, city stamp (St Petersburg), and 84 fineness stamp (that is, 84/96 or 875 silver). Weight: 6 troy ounces.
