A finely made English Georgian later silver mounted black basalt teapot decorated with classical winged cherub designs to either side and dating from around 1810. The teapot has a decagon shaped body with a large raised loop pouring handle with thumb rest and with a straight angled spout mounted with a silver end. This is a beautiful orphaned teacup made by Spode in about 1810. It bears a beautiful Japanese-inspired Imari pattern.
Spode was the great pioneer among the Georgian potters in England. Around the year 1800 he perfected the bone china recipe that has been used by British potters ever since, and he was also the leading potter behind the technique of transferware, making it possible for English potters to replace the Chinese export china, which had come to an end around that time, with their own designs. This was fundamental to a thriving industry that would last for about 150 years and provide half the world with their tableware. Spode porcelain is regarded as one of the highest quality porcelains around; for a soft-paste porcelain it is surprisingly hard and fine, and has a wonderful bright white colour.
The pattern on this can is called "Dollar" pattern, a very famous pattern that was used by English potters in the 18th and early 19th Century. It is obvious why it is called “dollar” - but its origin is less obvious! It is thought that this pattern was derived from a very old Chinese pattern depicting a tree with elaborate foliage that hides a Chinese character representing longevity or happiness. An exceptional, fine antique George IV English sterling silver three piece tea service / set made by Charles Thomas Fox; part of our silver teaware collection
This exceptional antique sterling silver three piece tea service consists of a teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl.
Each piece has an oval rounded compressed form on to a collet base and four bracket style feet.
The body of each piece is embellished with chased flower and foliate decoration incorporating a shaped cartouche to either side, each displaying a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a mower with his scythe proper habited*.
The upper rim of each piece is encompassed with a gadroon decorated border.
The swept shoulders and the swan necked spout of the teapot are further ornamented with chased floral and scrolling leaf decoration.
The original hinged hallmarked cover of the teapot is surmounted with a silver flower and leaf decorated finial.
The teapot is fitted with a C scroll sterling silver handle ornamented with an impressive leaf design incorporated into a scrolling thumbpiece.
The cream jug and sugar bowl have leaf decorated sterling silver C scroll handles and retain the original gilt interiors.
Each piece is supported by four impressive bracket style feet accented with floral and paw ornamentation in the classic Regency style.
The components of this exceptional antique teaware set were crafted by the renowned London silversmith Charles Thomas Fox.
* The crest pertains to the Pilkington family, who are found in the Counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire, although other families bearing the name are found further afield and a similar crest. Whether these families are genealogically connected is not known. The Pilkingtons, of Rivington in the County of Lancashire are probably the more ancient and senior line. Legend has it that a member of the family (which was said to be one of repute prior to the Norman Conquest of 1066) disguised himself when sought by Norman soldiers as a mower and escaped. A similar legend adheres to another Lancashire family, the De Traffords or Traffords in which a member of that family avoided capture by the Parliamentarians during the Civil War of the 17th Century by disguising himself as simple-minded thresher wielding a frail rather than the Pilkington's scythe.
There is certainly a possibility that this tea service was in the possession the baronetcy family of Pilkington, of Stanley in the County of Yorkshire who descended from Sir Alexander de Pilkington who held lands at Rivington during the reign of King Henry III. The baronet at the time of the manufacture of this tea service was Sir William Pilkington, the 8th Baronet (baptised 14th November 1775 died 30th 1850).

This Chamberlain's Worcester porcelain hand painted and gilded tea set consists of 31 pieces- a teapot and stand, a lidded sugar box, milk jug, slop bowl, two cake plates and twelve tea bowls and twelve saucers. The pattern, 351, on Chamberlain's New Oval shape, has retained its vibrancy of colour, but the gilding on the handles shows some wear. Four of the pieces have sustained some damage, the most obvious is to the tip of the teapot spout which has been fitted with a metal collar so that it can still pour. There are also two small chips to the inside rim of the pot. The sugar box as a chip to the base and another to the underside of the lid. One of the plates has a star crack to the base, and one of the teabowls has a crack. The milk jug has a shallow firing crack to the inside, but this was filled with glaze in the factory. Apart from the pattern number, the set is unmarked. However, the pattern is shown in plate 239 of Berthoud's "Compendium of British Cups". The teapot corresponds with plate 1001 of Berthoud's "Directory of British Teapots...

This is a very rare and stunning little orphaned coffeecup made by Derby in about 1790. The cup has a white ground, simple gilt rims and a stunning named mountain landscape painted by Zachariah Boreman.
The Derby factory, later reshaped into Royal Crown Derby, is currently the oldest British porcelain factory still in production. Derby was one of the most prominent potteries right from the start of English porcelain production in the mid 1700s to today. Their items are of exceptionally high quality and many of the designs have become iconic, particularly the Imari designs; many of these are still being made today. Derby made many exciting designs in the Regency era, and this cup, which would have belonged to a large tea service, is a beautiful example. The marking at the underside indicates that the cup was produced some time between 1782 and 1800, however the style is from the mid-1790s.
Zachariah Boreman was one of the most celebrated painters at Derby. He arrived at Derby around 1774 after working at Chelsea, and remained until 1794, when he left in frustration with Michale Kean, the owner. Even though Boreman became one of the prime landscape painters at Derby, Kean would not pay him more and this caused Boreman to go back to London and work for the Simms decorating studio. Tea is a multicultural, multinational beverage and isn’t confined to any particular lifestyle or age group. It has humble beginnings, and one of its best-known origin stories places the first cups of tea in 2700 B.C. in China, where it was recognized for its medicinal properties. Jump ahead to 17th-century England, when Chinese tea began to arrive at ports in London. During the early 1800s, tea became widely affordable, and the concept of teatime took shape all over England. Today, more than 150 million people reportedly drink tea daily in the United States.
Early tea drinkers enjoyed their beverage in a bowl, and English potters eventually added a handle to the porcelain bowls so that burning your fingers became less of a teatime hazard. With the rise in the popularity of teatime, tea sets, also referred to as tea service, became a hot commodity.
During Queen Victoria’s reign, teakettles and coffeepots were added to tea services that were quite large — indeed, small baked goods were served with your drink back then, and a tea set could include many teacups and saucers, a milk pot and other accessories.
During the early 1920s, a sterling-silver full tea service and tray designed by Tiffany & Co. might include a hot-water kettle on a stand, a coffeepot, teapot, a creamer with a small lip spout, a waste bowl and a bowl for sugar, which the British were stirring into tea as early as the 18th century.
But you don’t have to limit your tea set to Victorian or Art Deco styles — shake up teatime with an artful contemporary service.
