Exceptional Georgian Silver Five Piece Tea and Coffee Set

About the Item

Superb and impressive 5-piece silver tea and coffee service in the rococo style made during the reign of George IV. The elaborate, highly decorative chasing around the bodies depicts the typical exuberant decorations of the period, incorporating finely detailed panels of foliage and floral work, scrolls and shells. There are also panels incorporating Bachannalian scenes featuring cherubim with grapes and vines. Cartouches on each piece bear the engraved inscription addere lege justitiam decus which translates to: It is one's honour to combine justice with law. These armorial bearings are those of the family of Adderley with Mills and undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Ralph Adderley (1781 -1851), of Coton Hall and Barlaston Hall in Staffordshire and Rosamund Mills in June 1816 in Ashbourne in Derbyshire. The silver tea and coffee pots have boar's head mask mounts and are finely hand chased. The silver tea urn, the teapot and coffee pot have domed covers, each surmounted by a detachable cast finial in the form of a reclining Chinese man, representative of the origins of tea.. With cast spouts and handles, the sugar bowl and milk jug are similarly profusely decorated and the interiors beautifully gilded. The teapot is 7" tall. The silver sugar bowl is 5¾" tall and silver jug 5" tall. The silver hot water urn, with its decorated lever tap, is 15¾"t all and rests on four finely decorated leaf scroll and scallop shell patterned supports. This set is in superb condition and weighs a highly impressive 233 troy oz (7245g). The dimensions shown are for the tea urn.
