About the Item

This is a beautiful cup and saucer and saucer made by Kerr & Binns in Worcester in circa 1855. The set is made in the "Sèvres" style with puce hand painted putti playing in a garden. Kerr & Binns was the continuation of the famous Flight, Barr & Barr factory in Worcester. The Worcester factory went through various partnerships and names and merged with its previous spin-off Chamberlains Worcester in 1852, creating the Kerr & Binns partnership. This period was one of great innovation and the merging of two exceptionally talented teams of workers meant that the factory went to new heights of creativity and quality. Eventually the factory absorbed its other previous spin-off, Grainger Worcester, as well, and was then turned into Royal Worcester, which became very famous in the late 19th and 20th centuries. During the late 18th and entire 19th century they were among the leaders of porcelain production, producing exceptionally finely painted and sculpted items. This little set is an example of the imitations Kerr & Binns made of the teaware by the famous French Sèvres factory. The cup has the typical "dolphin" handle that Sèvres made, and the cup has a slightly bulging shape. Both cup and saucer have reserves with images of a pair of putti playing in a garden, hand painted in puce. The reserves are bordered by gilt laurels with ribbons, and there are gilt bands of sprigs around the rim of each item. On either side of the reserve on the coffee cup is a little bouquet of polychrome flowers. The saucer is marked with the red printed round Kerr & Binns mark. Condition report: The set is in very good antique condition without any damage or repairs and no wear. However, the items have crazing as visible in the pictures. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
