About the Item

This zoomorphic vessel in the shape of a llama with an elongated globular body is from the Chancay civilisation, dated between 1000 and 1400 AD. The Chancay were a pre-Columbian archaeological civilisation which developed between the valleys of Fortaleza, Pativilca, Supe, Huaura, Chancay, Chillón, Rimac and Lurin, on the central coast of Peru. It is a fine and very tactile example of the period and does have provenance from Sotheby's, London, circa 1970. It measures 11 in - 28 cm in length, 4 1/2 in - 11.5 cm wide and 5 1/2 in - 14 cm in height. This vessel would make an exceptional addition to both a collection as well as a decorators' piece for a range of rooms.
