Giant C.J. Spooner Carved "Crown Center" Carousel Panel
About the Item
Spooner went the extra mile with his Crown Center pieces. The top of the panel depicts the wind surrounded by flowers and greenery. The bottom panel is an elegantly carved cockerel surrounded by berries and flowers. Spooner used cockerels in many of his carvings.
The cut-out portions of Spooner's Crown Center pieces were often brilliantly cut mirrors or oil paintings of popular celebrities of the period. We speculate that this piece originally had a mirror due to the ornate detail of the carving.
A stripped down version of this panel is referenced on page 30 of the popular reference book "Fairground Art."
