Speakeasy Gambling Wheel
About the Item
This Roulette wood rimmed bicycle wheel had been converted to a double-sided Roulette wheel and used at Speakeasies during the Prohibition in America. The color remains a vibrant yellow with deep red & black detailing and painted numbers. The gambling wheel spins freely until it finally lands on a number by the leather flap. History: It was during Prohibition in America that it was illegal to drink or even possess alcohol. Underground or secret saloons cropped up and sold alcohol smuggled across the borders by Bootleggers. These saloons, or Speakeasies soon came under the control and run by gangsters. It was a secret place where alcohol was served, and gambling as well as prostitution proved big business. By 1933 there were 200,000 Speakeasies in America. Another interesting fact is in New York alone there were 32,000 Speakeasies, whereas before the prohibition of alcohol there had been only 15,000 saloons. This Speakeasy Gambling Wheel is a great piece of Americana and looks really cool hung on a wall.
