About the Item

A very stylish Scottish studio pottery shallow dish decorated with abstract designs by Barbara Davidson and dating from the early 1970's. The small rounded stoneware dish stands on a narrow flat rounded base and is of simple form with the outer bowl unglazed. The inner bowl is decorated with an abstract pattern relating to the sea, sky or shoreline and is hand painted in tones of blue and brown on a white ground with a ships wheel design to the centre of the bowl. The bowl has an impressed makers mark to the base and retains an original artists paper label. Barbara Davidson was brought up in Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland, and in 1964 attended Glasgow School of Art. She established her own pottery in Larbert in 1969 and her work always reflected the influences of the sea, sky and shoreline. One of her largest commissions was a ceramic mural measuring some 7 feet in length and 4 feet in height - this can still be seen in the Ladies Waiting Room at Queen Street Station in Glasgow. In good original condition.
