About the Item
Pre-Columbian 20K Gold Nose Ornament. Decorated 20K gold nose ornament, Moche Period, Peru. 450 - 550 CE. Fascinating and mysteriously designed, repousse decorated Pre-Columbian gold nose ornament found in the Ayabaca Region of Northern Peru in the mid-20th Century. Purchased in 1964 by Stolper Galleries in New York, and remained in the collection as a treasured example of the ancient goldsmith's art. Testing at 20K gold, it was made on thin, very flexible hammered sheet gold that exhibits supporting evidence of its centuries of burial through a half dozen small nicks and cracks in its body and along its edges. Crescent shaped with embossed designs. The gold sheet is 78.5% to 79.1% (equivalent to 18K - 19K) with silver ranging from 17% to 18%. The perforation at the top indicates its use as a septum piercing, and interestingly, this panel would over the wearer's mouth and chin, symbolizing high authority. Moche elites wore nose ornaments, often obscuring the mouth, as political and religious status symbols, conveying social status, lineage, and spiritual significance. Believed to grant supernatural power, these adornments played a key role in Moche rituals and were frequently depicted in pottery and sculpture. Although it came without specific cultural assignment, it is believed to Moche in origin dating circa 0 - 800 AD and was almost certainly worn by a shaman or tribal leader. This unique and mystical ornament could probably be adapted for wear with the addition of a bezel and sufficient backing to protect it from damage. Presented in a small glass framed Riker style mount. Comes with certificate of authenticity and a map of Peru highlighting the site of Ayabaca within the Moche area. 3 ½"L x 2 ¼"W, 6 grams.
Ex. Hank Johnson Collection. Hank Johnson was a geologist, and passionate collector of historical and ancient artifacts. Starting with relics and bottles from ghost towns, he later focused on Anasazi pottery and Pre-Columbian. He worked with the Denver Art Museum to verify authenticity, building a respected reputation in the collecting community.

Moche Red Ware Pottery Vessel with man figure. Moche Horizon of Peru, Circa 450 - 550 CE. In overall good condition, some chipping around the mouth of the narrow spout, and there’s a small spiderweb push on the back of the jar that appears to have resulted from a probe that penetrated the left side just below the figure (two small holes, one on the front upper left corner of the throne, and the other just around to the side, have been repaired). 6” x 4” x 6”. Supernatural Being, Pre-Columbian Gold Pendant, Costa Rica, circa 800 to 1500 AD
Located in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon
Southern Costa Rica or Western Panama, circa 800 to 1500 AD. A very fine example of the goldwork of the Veraguas-Chiriqui-Diquis region. A pendant in Carbonera style of a supernatural being, a composite monster with human torso and feline (probably jaguar) head. The figure is set in a frame decorated with little animal heads, one at each corner. The hands have also turned into animal heads. In place of genitalia is a stylized serpent head suspended by a twisted cord that was supposed to continue across the frame. A minor casting accident prevented it form being attached to the frame. A modern goldsmith would solder in two short lengths of twisted wire, but the ancient goldsmith did not have the equipment to make such repair. A double thread ending in spirals goes across the frame behind the neck of the figure, helping to fill up the frame and avoiding a large empty space. The word "thread" reminds us that the twisted and straight cords were, in the original wax model of the pendant really extruded wax threads, turned into metal by the lost wax (cire perdue) process. The braid pattern on the frame is illusory, just two twisted threads of extruded wax laid side by side. The goldsmith made the toes out of extruded wax thread too, very decorative as well. The piece comes with a certificate of authenticity by Mr. Robert Sonin, 5 May 2006. ref. photo roll 3301. A world renowned expert on Pre-Columbian Artifacts...

Museum Quality Pre-Columbian Gold Twin Figures Pendant, circa 800 to 1500 AD
Located in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon
Southern Costa Rica/Western Panama, circa 800 to 1500 AD. Gold Veraguas-Chiriqui-Diquis twin figure pendant cast by the lost-wax (cire perdu) grasping an imaginary club with their claws, with bat ears and pop out eyes and each figure ending in the shape of a jaguar tooth, symbolizing the power of the jaguar and the ability to see in the dark; The casting process did not go entirely smoothly. Part of his mold, on the side of the proper right figure (viewer's left side), did not fill with metal. The Pre-Columbian goldsmith carried out a superb repair, probably making a wax patch and pouring gate on the gold pendant, then enclosing it in a new mold and pouring in more metal. The patch is hardly visible on the outside. A modern goldsmith, who cannot do it as well, would use his gas torch to solder on a patch. The gold is of such high grade or karat, possibly unalloyed native gold...
