About the Item
An interesting and rather unusual primitive Pre-Columbian style Native South or Central American (Mesoamerican) primitive bird sculpture/ instrument. We believe this piece is a hand painted clay ocarina - a flute like instrument that was used by Mayan, Mexican, and people of the Americas. In parts of South and Central America, ocarinas were used by shamans to communicate with the dead and supernatural. This ritual is still practiced today in some regions This piece features an array of different creatures and animals depending at what angle you view it - bird, fish, hedge-hog, etc...
This piece is likely from the late 19th/early 20th century but it could be older.
From a fine Southern California collection of Native American Folk Art, artifacts, and pottery.
A special and somewhat rare piece. Would be a great addition to any primitive art collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent piece in about any setting.

Dora De Larios Signed Mexican American California Studio Pottery Sculpture
By Dora De Larios
Located in Studio City, CA
A fabulous, rare, and unique large horse and rider sculpture/ candelabra by famed Mexican American California studio art potter Dora De Larios. It is one of her earlier works. Quite rare and special in this respect.
De Larios was born in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrant parents. She grew up in the artistic Silver Lake district near downtown Los Angeles amongst Mexican and Nisei Japanese immigrants. As a result, De Larios was heavily influenced by ancient American...
