About the Item
British Sailor's Woolwork Picture of Five Ships offshore,
Circa 1875
The large sailor's woolwork or sailor's woolie depicts five different ships. The largest ship is in the center and is a steam assisted three-masted ram bowed ship flying the white ensign and banner. In the foreground to the right is a Royal Navy two-masted paddle ship with two masts and to the left another ship sail with two masts also under full sail. Behind, closer to shore, are another two ships under full sail, one to the left sailing towards land and the other with a white ensign sailing away from land.
The sea is a dark blue and in the background is the shore with wave rippling in. A lighthouse and a barn can be seen by the shore while to either side are grassy hills against the light blue sky.
