About the Item

These two hand-carved sheep by Stephen Huneck capture everything that makes his work so beloved: warmth, whimsy, and an unshakable respect for rural life. One sheep stands tall with an alert gaze, while the other gently grazes, their rounded bodies adorned with stylized, spiraling wool. Their faces and feet are painted a glossy black, offering a crisp contrast to the soft white coats. Each piece is signed by Huneck, one dated 1989 and the other 1991—early, highly collectible examples of his signature style. Stephen Huneck (1948–2010) was a master carver whose work distilled the spirit of the Vermont countryside into joyful, handcrafted sculptures. Best known for his dog carvings and the famed Dog Chapel in St. Johnsbury, Huneck’s broader work often celebrated farm animals with the same affection and humor. These sheep are classic Huneck—playful, tender, and deeply rooted in the American folk tradition.
