Evening Flight Over the Lake — Mid-20th Century Painting After The Field, 1939

About the Item

A striking mid-20th century landscape painting titled Evening Flight Over the Lake, inspired by the evocative November 4, 1939 cover of The Field—“The Country Newspaper.” This atmospheric scene captures a trio of silhouetted ducks gliding across a twilight sky, their forms stark against the glowing clouds and shadowed tree line. Rendered in richly layered tones of blue, violet, and gold, the piece beautifully translates the original black-and-white photograph by E. Barraud of Saddle Gate, Wollaton, Nottingham into a vibrant, painterly vision. The artist, identified only by the monogram “JS” in red at the lower right, demonstrates a confident and sensitive hand. The verso retains the actual vintage cover of The Field that inspired the work, affixed to the backing board—offering both provenance and a narrative link to the original image. Presented in a classic ebonized frame with a gilt rope-twist liner, the painting exudes both warmth and British sporting charm, ideal for collectors of vintage landscapes and field sports ephemera. Dimensions: Frame: Approx. 17.5” H x 16” W x 2” D Sight: Approx. 11.75” H x 10.25” W Condition: Very good vintage condition. Painting surface is stable and clean. Frame shows minor wear consistent with age. The 1939 newspaper backing is worn and fragile but largely intact and legible, enhancing the story of the piece.
