John Brewster attributed Portrait of Dr.Jostan Osgood (1742-1812)
About the Item
Identity of the sitter ( Dr.Jostan Osgood 1742-1812) given on an old label on back.
Unique to Brewsters' paintings is an air of silence and stillness. He also
captures the spirit and character of his sitters. The pink and white
against the black and brown is very expressive. Hands/fingers thick and cylindrical. Most itinerate paintings can only be identified as to the artist
on stylistic grounds, but it's a worthwhile pursuit for that small group whose
paintings stand as art in themselves.
