About the Item
This striking Northwest Coast totem pole is an exceptional hand-carved wood sculpture created by renowned Nootka (Nuu-chah-nulth) artist Joe David (b. 1945), a celebrated figure in the Indigenous art revival of the Pacific Northwest. Crafted in the 1970s, the totem stands an impressive 120 inches tall, 36 ¾ inches wide, and 17 inches deep, making it a powerful statement piece for collectors and designers alike.
Carved from solid wood with bold traditional motifs, the pole reflects the rich cultural symbolism and spiritual heritage of the Nootka people. Joe David’s work is deeply rooted in his ancestral traditions while also engaging with contemporary artistic expression.
About the Artist:
Joe David, born in 1945 in Opitsaht, British Columbia, is a master carver and prominent figure in Northwest Coast Native art. Trained by his father and later influenced by other Indigenous masters, David was instrumental in the resurgence of traditional carving techniques and ceremonial art in the latter half of the 20th century. His works are held in major public and private collections, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Royal British Columbia Museum. Known for his spiritual approach to art and meticulous craftsmanship, Joe David remains one of the most respected First Nations artists of his generation.
This monumental totem is not only a rare and museum-quality artwork—it is a powerful tribute to the enduring spirit and creativity of the Nootka culture.
