About the Item

An extremely rare English Regency Blue John and marble clockcase that has been retrofitted with a gilt bronze framed enamel portrait medallion of a lady. Presumably the clock that originally formed part of the case was lost or damaged and was cleverly replaced by the convex glass fronted portrait medallion . The clock case is composed of a blue john tazza set on a black marble base which is mounted on top of a square blue john clockcase. The clockcase is decorated with white marble trim and rests on a black marble base. Blue John (also known as Derbyshire Spar) is a semi-precious mineral, a form of fluorite with bands of a purple-blue or yellowish color. This mineral was exclusively found in the United Kingdom, specifically in the Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern n Derbyshire. It was mined and almost all used in 19th century to make decorative objects such as tazzas urns candle sticks candelabra bowls etc. for Royalty and nobility.
