Rare Late 18th Century French Hand-Carved Angel Wood Statue Articulated Arms

About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this exceptionally rare late 18th early 19th-century hand carved wood statue of an Angel with lovely movement and articulated arms A truly stunning piece, I’ve only ever seen one other which is listed on 1stdibs for £12,000 and that isn’t a patch on this piece. This statue is so wonderful, the pictures really don’t do it justice, the timber patina is to die for, there are large burrs in the right side of the head, the main body from the front seems to be cut from one large burr as the swirls are so huge, the piece has been carved from solid slabs of the same cut of wood, then nailed together in sections, it is exquisite Naturally a piece of this age has developed a softness and tactile feel to the edges, you really can’t replicate the warmth of this object, it is amazing, the good lady seems to be in full flow either dancing ballet or perhaps running, I’m not sure which but what I am sure of is how graceful and lovely she is The condition is period, there are some small losses as you can see, the top of the thumb on the left hand as you look at her is missing revealing the nail under which is more charming than seeing the whole thumb! There’s no front foot although I’m not sure it was ever there as the back foot is so small, really none of this matters, the fact this piece still exists and is in one piece is the important thing and at well over 200 years old we can forgive her for being a little dishevelled The stand is height adjustable and the arms are articulated so the can be removed Dimensions: Height 125cm height adjustable stand -12cm Width 50.5cm Depth 60cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide Condition: Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
