About the Item
"Dancing Sailor" by Ernest Paul Lehman of Brandenburg, Germany; patented in 1903 (see image of marking) appears in post turn of the century Lehman Toy catalogues as item #535. After winding up the attached clockwork key in the sailor's back, and resting feet down on the floor, (see attached video), the sailor waddles back and forth simulating the proverbial stereotypical drunken sailor.
Note the "Lehman" markings and patent information "Pat. March 12, 1903" clearly printed on the underside of both metal feet (see images).
The body is metal and covered with fabric clothing which is usually found tattered, incomplete, faded, or otherwise worn. This example is excellent with the uniform intact, complete, and with strong navy blue colors. The face is extraordinary with just about all of the original flesh colored paint, blue eyes and brown hair with zero chipping or paint loss (See close-up images). Same goes for the hands. The cap is hand painted in navy blue with no missing paint (see images). Shoes are black. I have thoroughly examined with a loop and a black light and I guarantee the toy to be as I have described.
There is no need to ever have to upgrade this example; it would be a wonderful addition to a discerning collection of antique toys, are as a stand alone piece on the shelf----perhaps for a navy veteran.
The toy is memorialized and referenced as "EPL #535" and documented on page 63 of the book "Lehman Toys" by Jurgen & Marianne Cieslik, published in 1982.

This mechanical bank "Saluting Sailor" was manufactured in the 1920s by Saalheimer & Strauss Company in Germany. It is in excellent all original condition and brightly hand painted in colors of red, white, blue, yellow, and grey. There is an ever so slight crease to the left on dial.
The bank operates as follows:
Press down on the lever in front just beneath the steering wheel.
The sailor raises his right arm and lowers his left arm revealing a slot on the right side of the bank where the sailor's left arm was, inviting the deposit of a coin (see image). Release the lever, and the arms return to their original position (see image).
Coins are removed via the original key lock trap.
The bank measures:
6 3/4" high
4 7/8" wide
2" deep

Antique toys like this (wind ups) are difficult to find in outstanding operating condition as this one (see the video attached) because of the rough play they would have received from the children who owned them. In very good and all original condition and paint in green, white, yellow, and flesh tone; the paint and lithography has no touch up or repaint of any kind; there is zero restoration.
To operate, just turn clockwise the attached clockwork wind up key on the back of the girl and the she dances around in a circular motion for quite some time. "Dancing Katinka" is an all tin wind up toy...

Vintage "Dapper Clown" Roly Poly Toy; Scarce. Germany Circa 1915

Vintage hard to find "Rolly Dolly" Toy; unknown German maker, circa 1915; I have named "Dapper Clown"; this is one of the more rare "Rolly Dolly's" (really rare in this condition). Today we call these toys "Roly Poly's". You knock them over and they always "right" themselves and get upright; probably after the 17th C. Japanese "Daruma Dolls" at some level.
I'm not sure of the actual thematic genesis of this character, but the excellent condition, very simply, separates this from any other similar Roly Poly's, Watch the attached video to see how it was played with to better appreciate the condition. 8" high puts it in the "taller" category for this toy.
