About the Item

This delightful early 20th-century decorated child’s pencil box is both functional and full of character. Crafted from hand-cut wood with a slightly rustic charm, the box bears a lithograph transfer floral decoration, reflecting the Arts and Crafts aesthetic popular at the time. The smooth, well-worn texture of the wood speaks to years of loving use, while its clever design showcases remarkable ingenuity. The top lid, with a circular thumb indentation, slides open to reveal four channels for pencils or pens and a smaller oval recess for an eraser. This section swivels on a small screw to uncover three additional compartments for writing implements. A child’s name, “Elsa,” is charmingly inscribed at the bottom of one compartment, while the underside of the lid bears the handwritten name “Karen Coveyou,” adding a personal, historical touch. The base of the box also features another sliding compartment with a larger storage area. With its multiple layers of hidden storage, this pencil box is not only tactile and engaging but also a wonderful example of early 1900s design for schoolchildren. Collectors of antique school supplies, Arts and Crafts decorative objects, or vintage wooden boxes will appreciate its rarity and authenticity. Still functional and full of warmth, this charming piece makes a thoughtful gift or a captivating addition to a writing desk or collection. Condition: General wear consistent with use and age. The interior shows ink stains and child’s writing. The exterior exhibits expected surface wear. The upper lid slides a little tightly, while the lower sliding compartment moves more loosely.
