1930's Woven Bark Fibre Panel

About the Item

This 1930's panel, from the Mbole culture in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has been woven from bark fibre. Dark-coloured strands of fibre, dyed with the roots of a banana tree, have been used to create bold, striking geometric designs which beautifully interplay with the panel's pale background. No two Mbole woven bark panels are the same - each panel is unique. Woven panels such as this would have been originally used to decorate the walls of a traditional Mbole meeting house.
