African Dogon antique wooden ladder/wooden object/20th century

About the Item

This is a wooden ladder made by the Dogon tribe of West Africa. With a unique history and culture, they live at the foot of cliffs, with about 700 villages and a population of about 250,000. In recent years, their land has been registered as a World Heritage Site. Their houses are made of sun-dried bricks, which are completed by piling up bricks and covering the surface with soil. It also has a granary, which is characterized by a thatched roof or square shape. This warehouse is made of hardened mud. The item we're introducing this time is a ladder for going in and out of the grain warehouse. I posted a reference photo, so please take a look. A bifurcated tree with a branched tip is used so that it can be leaned against the wall and stabilized. They are also used to climb to the entrance of the granary and climb steep cliffs, and can range in length from just over one meter to nearly three meters, depending on the application. This item is quite old and the trees have died considerably. It is estimated that the production period is from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The material is probably a very hard wood such as teak. As a result, this item is dry and looks fragile, but overall it is very hard. It seems that it is rare to see such a dry and old one. It was owned by a Japanese collector of African art. The tools that have supported the lives of the Dogon people have a very powerful presence. In particular, it is a design tool that cannot be imagined from our modern life. When you put them in your room, you will feel a very attractive beauty. Highly recommended item.
