About the Item
Kenyan Massai tribe hand painted hide shield circa 1920. Not to be confused with modern reproductions.
Beautiful decorative piece from Kenya, likely to be from the Massai or Kikuya tribes.
Almond shaped, with hand painted geometric designs and muted colours of russet, black, cream and blue. These colours are typical mixed with natural elements. Hand woven outer edge. Hand carved handle with woven strap work. These shields were often used as social rights to passage.
These shields were made with cow or buffalo hides.
Minor surface fading, evidence of minor wood worm which has been treated to handle.
