About the Item

Maasai, African Great Lakes Region, Probably early 20th century The 'rungu' is a traditional weapon and emblem of authority among the Maasai people of East Africa, especially in Kenya and Tanzania. Rich in historical and cultural significance, the rungu is a short, weighted club with a unique design, typically crafted from hardwood or, at times, metal. The 'rungu' functions as both a tool and a weapon, primarily used for defense against predators like lions on the open plains. Skilled warriors employ it effectively in self-defense, either by throwing it with precision or wielding it in close combat.
