This antique 19th-century Crow beaded blanket strip is a stunning example of Plains Indian craftsmanship. Constructed from native tanned hide and adorned with glass trade beads and red stroud cloth (trade cloth), this piece features intricate beadwork in light blue, yellow, red, dark blue, and white beads arranged in geometric and bar designs. The strip is divided into four rectangular segments, with each segment separated by three round rosettes. Each rosette is beautifully beaded in pink, light blue, yellow, dark blue, and white beads, with hide suspensions in the center, adding both texture and movement to this decorative piece.
The Crow people (Apsáalooke), meaning "Children of the Large Beaked Bird," are part of the Northern Plains Indian culture group. Traditionally worn as a symbol of rank and title, this beautiful Kuba chieftain's cap (laket mishiing) is embellished with cowrie shells and rows of blue, white and black glass beads. The body of the hat has been fashioned from raffia fibre using the woven basketry technique, and displays the typical form of the Kuba 'laket' cap, with four scallop-shaped 'ears'. When worn, one of the 'ears' would have been squarely positioned at the front of the wearer's forehead.
Given to Kuba men upon completion of an initiation rite, small dome-shaped raffia hats signalled their transformation into mature members of Kuba society. As a Kuba man moved up the social ladder, his headgear would change, with male titleholders commissioning local artisans to produce splendidly decorated prestige hats to signal his rank. A mid-20th century large ceremonial initiation mask likely by the Iatmul people of the middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, located between the Blackwater River and Karawari River in East Sepik Province.
Impressively sized and well executed fantastical bird-like form with a 20-inch-long beak or nose and wide-open mouth, comprised of tightly hand-woven wicker basketry over a bent wood frame. Darkened surface is hand-painted with black, white, and salmon-colored natural earth pigment details and shapes.
A copper-colored, hand-knotted raffia fringe embellishes nearly the entire perimeter of the piece. A fluffy tuft of cassowary feathers decorates the tip of the beak or nose, while a few more cassowary feathers remain at the top of the head. Opening on underside is 9.5 inches in diameter.
