About the Item
Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors in addition to his famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In the painting ""The Art of Painting"" a beautiful golden chandelier is displayed above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers permitted artists to demonstrate their expertise at rendering shimmering and refractive brass under changing light conditions. A true testament to their craft and artistry.
Exuding Dutch design sensibilities, the 19th century Vermeer 108 chandelier lights up spaces with its single tiered hollow brass frame. Eight graceful arms illuminate the petite 56cm wide fixture, accented by scrolled metalwork details bordering the circular frame. At just 50cm high, this golden chandelier maintains a refined presence befitting manor halls and parlors of its era. Though crafted long ago, the Vermeer 108 is modernly wired to brighten today's interiors with its warm, understated elegance. With its curved brass arms and intricately embellished frame, this lighting piece honors cherished Dutch metalworking traditions.
Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted.

Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink & van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
