History: David Guéron and the Verrerie d’Art Degué A Glassmaking Entrepreneur at the Heart of Art Deco David Guéron (1892–1950), a glass artist of Turkish origin and Spanish nationality, is a unique figure within the Art Deco movement in France. He is best known as the founder of the Verrerie d’Art Degué, which operated in Paris from 1926 to 1939. From Compiègne Beginnings to Parisian Expansion In the 1920s, David Guéron founded the Compiègne crystal works before turning to luxury artistic glassmaking. In 1926, he set up his workshop on Boulevard Malesherbes in Paris under the name Verrerie d’Art Degué. There, he primarily designed vases, bowls, wall sconces, and chandeliers in the Art Deco style, characterized by geometric shapes, clean lines, and a rich color palette. An Inspired — Sometimes Too Inspired — Aesthetic Degué's creations were heavily influenced by master glassmakers from Lorraine, such as Daum, the Muller brothers, and especially Charles Schneider. This stylistic closeness led to accusations of plagiarism and even legal disputes. Nevertheless, Degué’s glassworks enjoyed a measure of commercial success, meeting the growing demand for modern decorative objects in the interwar period. Crisis and the Company's Demise In August 1936, David Guéron was imprisoned in Compiègne for attempting to sell assets belonging to a bankrupt company — likely connected to his earlier ventures in crystal production. This legal trouble accelerated the decline of his glassworks. In 1939, as World War II broke out, the company ceased operations permanently. Guéron left France for the United States, bringing his glassmaking career to an end. A Recognized Art Deco Legacy Today, pieces signed Degué are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Their heritage value lies not only in their artistic quality but also in their place within a period of intense creativity and competition among French glassmakers. Don’t miss out on this rare item!
